The floor coating is probably the original garage flooring product — paints and epoxy have been used for years. Today, new technology has greatly improved the installation process and performance of coatings, but epoxy can still be a difficult project for the Do-It-Yourself homeowner or inexperienced contractor. Some of our customers consider garage floor mats and garage floor tiles as alternatives to garage floor epoxy.
Anyone who owns a car realizes that their vehicle tends to leave behind traces of various chemicals when parked. To protect the integrity of your garage floor, you need high-quality flooring that can withstand and properly resist these substances, but too many people settle for subpar materials that perform inadequately and prove to be short-lived. In response to the demand for durable floor coatings, we provide an assortment of flooring solutions that can endure continual use—and that are visually attractive as well. No matter what kind of location you have, Garage Flooring can supply the materials you need for your floor.
The huge growth in the garage flooring industry has created the opportunity for every major coating manufacturer to come out with new products. The competitive market has resulted in a wide range of coatings, some of which work well, and others that are low quality. As a rule of thumb, most of the coatings that advertise easy installation (some even with a lifetime warranty) simply don’t provide the appearance or performance that our customers are looking for- essentially, if it seems too easy, it probably is. A good coating requires a professional-grade epoxy or synthetic material. Learn more about the best garage floor coatings. Read our related article about the Do’s and Dont’s of Garage Floor Paint.
When you shop coatings, make sure you pay attention to the Mil thickness. A Mil is only 1/1000th of an inch!
We offer a complete line of specialty garage floor concrete coatings as well as industrial and commercial concrete coatings. We have worked with multiple manufacturers to develop and supply our customers with the best combinations of products. The simple truth is that sometimes coating your garage floor requires treatment from one manufacturer, an epoxy from another, and a urethane topcoat from yet a third manufacturer. We have taken all of these products and combined them into a package deal that is guaranteed to provide you with the best coatings on the market. Our sister company offers a full line of ceramic coatings.
Garage floor coatings are used in many types of environments extending beyond garages. The benefits of the right floor coating can greatly improve the durability and overall longevity of all types of flooring, whether you need garage floor finishes to protect against heavy foot or vehicle traffic, optimize chemical resistance, or improve your space’s aesthetics.
Some of the different applications for floor coatings include:
Depending on your requirements, there are plenty of high-quality garage floor coatings available. Some of the specific reasons you might apply floor coatings could include everything from repairing surface imperfections and restoring damaged concrete to adding texture and color along with a smoother finish. There’s no shortage of possibilities available to give you the results you want from your completed flooring solution.
Based on your flooring needs, there are plenty of floor coating options to choose from that can provide varying results.
The following are among the most common types of garage floor coatings:
Many of these products are available in complete floor coating kits that make installing them on your existing flooring easy. They’ll provide you with clear guidelines for cleaning, floor prep, and installation to keep the process smooth, all while giving you the necessary materials that meet your project requirements.
Before you begin coating your garage floor or another concrete floor, there are some preparatory steps you must take to successfully apply your floor coatings.
One of the first steps you must take is to clean the floor and remove any debris and dirt present on the surface. Doing so will help ensure the floor coating sticks to the surface more effectively.
Additionally, you’ll benefit from making the foundational flooring rougher through sanding or etching, which will further help the floor coating adhere to the surface.
Proper preparation is ultimately key when getting ready to install all types of floor coatings. A reliable concrete garage floor coating supplier should provide you with in-depth instructions for adequate preparation when installing floor coating solutions.

Epoxy floor coatings can take up to 10 days to completely cure. Polyurea coatings take two to six hours for each coat to cure, can be walked on in as little as eight hours, and can handle wheel traffic after about 48 to 72 hours. Garage floor coatings are an ideal way to give your garage floor a beautiful glossy look that also protects the surface from chemicals and abrasions. Please note that the concrete floor must be free from dust, oils, dirt, and other contaminants before applying the coat. Rough, slightly porous surfaces provide better adhesion, so thoroughly prepping the surface is necessary.
While no coating is perfect, our 100% solid epoxy option is an excellent choice for any garage floor. Epoxy coatings are thicker but have a shorter working time, so if you’re a beginner DIYer, we recommend polyurea, a thinner, UV-resistant coating that is easier to work with. Epoxy coatings don’t shrink, so they’re ideal for a surface with more damage than the average garage floor. Epoxy floor coatings are also applied at a higher mil thickness, meaning you can cover more space. However, it requires a few recoats; once the floor cures, you will have to apply a top coat for optimal results. Epoxy floor coatings can be slippery, which is something to keep in mind.
One of the benefits of using a polyurea coating is that it dries once applied to the concrete surface. Polyurea coatings dry much faster than epoxy. In fact, once it’s dry, you can walk on the surface after only eight to 12 hours. It goes on concrete surfaces smoothly and is easily absorbed in the pores and crevices of the concrete. Once the applications are complete, polyurea garage floor coatings will help keep your concrete floor in tip-top shape for many years.
