A Solid Epoxy Kit
100% solids epoxy is a system, not a product. This system is designed to provide you with ultra-high performance and chemical resistance while achieving a high build. That’s epoxy jargon for you are going to have one heck of a thick floor when you are done.
What Do I Still Need?
- *Prep Materials: You will need to decide if you want to acid etch or grind your concrete to prepare it for the coating. You do not need to do both.
- *NIOSH-Approved paint respirators for everyone working on the install
- *Painter’s tape (Important: Tape needs to be pulled while the coating is wet and reapplied to each coat to avoid the tape getting stuck to your coating
- Clothes that you don’t care about. The coating is very difficult to remove from clothing and skin if it dries onto them.
- Shoe covers to avoid unwanted dirt or contaminants in the coating
- Xylene or Mineral Spirits for removing product from surfaces in case of an accident
*-Required for a successful installation. The other items on this list are strongly recommended. Give us a call if you are unsure on what items you need.
Success Requires a Primer
Epoxy systems are often marketed without a primer because consumers are price sensitive. We prefer to lose a sale than have a customer who does not have the proper system in place. A good, high build, 100% solids, garage floor epoxy system starts with a good primer. This kit includes it.
Surface Preparation
100% solids epoxy product are not thinned with any solvents. If not properly prepared, the epoxy will not stick to your floor. Unlike high solids products which offer some forgiveness because they penetrate, a 100% solids epoxy system will fail if you do not prepare your floor properly. We highly suggest grinding your floor. If you want to acid etch, use our high solids system. We offer the Diamabrush system, however, several rental centers have the system available locally. We highly suggest the Diamabrush system for grinding your floor.
Why 100% Solids Epoxy?
In the vast majority of applications, 100% solids epoxy is overkill. You can get the same performance with an easier application using our high solids systems. 100% solids systems do offer advantages in certain applications. 100% solids systems do not shrink at all. This makes them a good selection for floors that have more damage to them than the average floor. In addition to not shrinking, they are applied at a higher mil thickness, so they cover more. In commercial and industrial applications as well as more demanding garages, they do offer some improved performance. The increased mil thickness provides greater durability compared to thin mil systems. Keep in mind once the floor cures, you are left with the same resin in either case. The true advantages come from the thickness the product goes on. 100% solids products are also VOC compliant as there are no solvents to flash off.
Aliphatic Urethane Topcoat
Have you ever started talking to a relatively attractive person and then they smile and their teeth are nasty and yellow? That’s what happens when you use the wrong top coat on a good epoxy system. Our single component aliphatic top coat is resistant to UV. It applies thicker than many other urethanes and is very high solids. It provides the chemical and abrasion resistance your 100% solids epoxy system needs!
Recoat Times
One of the most common questions we have is recoat times. Our suggestions are as follows — based on 70 degree temperature:
- Prime the floor (TL015): THEN Wait 7-10 Hours but Never more than 24 Hours.
- Epoxy Coat (TL707HS): THEN Wait 8-12 HOurs but never more than 24 hours
- Top Coat (TL356): Then Wait 9-13 hours before any additional coats. 24 hours for very light foot traffic and 7 days for full use.
Chemical Resistance Testing
The following chemical resistance chart is based on TL356 topcoated floors. If you do not use a topcoat or if you use a different top coat, the results will vary substantially.
