Rust Bullet Garage Floor Coating

You are looking to coat your garage floor, and frankly you can’t believe how painful the process is. You need to be part chemist, part mason and a whole lot of lucky. Then you have to hope the first time you pull your wife’s sports car into the garage it does not take your precious time and money right off the floor with hot tire lifting! Its 2015, surely there has to be a way to coat a concrete surface that does not involve harsh acids, precise measurements because of 20 minute work times. For years we have been on the forums preaching that there is no ‘silver bullet’ for this problem. As it turns out, there is a ‘Rust Bullet’.

Proven Technology

Rust Bullet for Garage Floors is not a new technology. It has been time proven on the wings of aircraft, the floors of industrial buildings, exterior applications subject to millions of gallons of running water. Rust Bullet is a one part moisture cure urethane that is over 70% solids by volume. It’s even strong enough to prevent damage from aviation grade magnesium chloride (deicer). It comes in one can. You open it, mix it for three minutes and apply it to a clean surface. This is not Fairy dust and a pipe dream, these phenomenal results were achieved after years of refinement and three years of extensive scientific testing, along with two United States Patents followed by years of successful application on top of successful application.

314 Degrees

Hot tire lifting? Water boils at 212 degrees F. Temperatures over 140 degrees can cause third degree burns. Rust Bullet has proven itself in continuous temperatures up to 314 Degrees F. Rust Bullet withstands temperatures in excess of 600 degrees for up to 3 days. Point blank, Rust Bullet puts hot tire lifting on ice. Your tires simply can’t get hot enough.

Forget the hard stuff & Forget the Guess Work

Rust Bullet for Conrete

Rust Bullet for Conrete No acid etching, no grinding. No need for exact measurements of Part A and Part B, because it’s only one part. Installation Temperature? 35 Degrees F to 110 Degrees F. Pot life? How about a month. Open the can, mix it for three minutes, pour out what you can use and tap the lid back on. Most floors, simply sweep them clean. Dirty floors, power wash them, well in advance of application. Oil Stains? Pre-treat with Metal Blast, allow to sit for at least 20 minutes, and rinse thoroughly. Minor cracks and abrasions? Not a problem, Rust Bullet is self-leveling and can be used to fill minor cracks and divots.

Important Update Your concrete should abosorb 1/4 cup of water within 30 seconds or it will need to be sanded prior to application.

Value: Coat it once, not Once a Year

Rust Bullet has no pricing advantage over average epoxy systems, is less expensive than high end systems and is considerably more expensive than cheap garage floor paint and epoxy products. The difference is it works, it works well and the average guy can do it properly without breaking his back or working with dangerous acids. Once done right, forget about it and never worry about it again.

Peace of Mind

If you follow very basic directions we guarantee that your floor will perform for years to come. It will not lift from hot tires. If you have a problem because of product performance, we will walk you through the solution and send you the Rust Bullet material needed to resolve it for up to 10 Years. Of course if you have a problem down the road or if you have a problem for other reasons, we will still stand by our product and help you find a solution.

Please note: ANY coating product can be slick when wet. The building owner should consider carefully the use of anti-skid in gray only systems and it is required in all clear and color applications.

FloorCalc™ | Garage Flooring Material Estimator

Garage Flooring Material Calculator

(decimal ft.)

(decimal ft.)

All estimates based on a residential floor. The result is the number of gallons needed to complete the minimum two coats of base. The optional result is for one coat of clear or top coat. For high traffic, commercial or industrial applications we suggest double the number of gallons suggested here. Material estimates based on averages but will vary, sometimes considerably. For a porous floor we suggest at least three coats. For Average to smooth floors we suggest at least two coats. A color coat may be added, at your option, but is not a substitute for a base coat.

Our calculation is based on the numbers provided above...Garage Flooring LLC recommends that you round up the width and the depth to the next nearest foot. For example: 17.1 decimal ft. will convert to 18 decimal ft.

Garage Floor Coatings

We offer a full line of garage floor coatings and epoxy products. Starting at about .80¢ / Sq. Ft.

Rust Bullet is a moisture cure, high percentage solids urethane originally formulated for coating metal. It has been time-tested over concrete again and again and has consistently proven itself. Rust Bullet requires no primer and very little floor prep in most situations. The standard base color is a metallic gray and it is fortified with an aluminum flake. Rust Bullet was originally designed for exterior application. It will not yellow and will perform for years regardless of harsh weather and UV conditions. Rust Bullet has been proven at continuous exposure to temperatures over 300 degrees and short term (less than 72 hours) to temperatures over 600 degrees. Application temperatures are from 35 degrees to 110 degrees but the product performs at temperatures well below freezing. Coverage: Coverage over good concrete is 400 Sq. Ft. per gallon and per coat. A minimum of two coats is required for residential applications, with three coats being recommended for more porous areas, and areas with high traffic. For commercial and industrial applications we suggest 3-4 coats. The color coat is absolutely not a requirement. It provides alternate color options and gloss options for those who want a high gloss, showroom look. Many of our customers prefer three coats of the base or two coats of the base and a layer of clear for gloss. If any of the Top Coat are added, including the clear coat, you MUST use a silica sand for traction. Dry Film Thickness (DFT) : This is an industry term for how much material is on the floor at the recommended spread rate. You should achieve a 2.4 – 3 Mil DFT per coat. Chemical Resistance: Rust Bullet has proven incredibly resistant to most chemicals found in the garage environment and is especially effective in harsh winter environments The product has been extensively tested against degradation from magnesium chloride – a primary ingredient used for deicing roads. Rust Bullet is self-leveling up to 1/4” and generally does not show roller or brush marks. It can be used for filling small cracks, and imperfections, however, concrete patch may prove substantially less expensive.

WARNING: Any coated surface can be slick when wet. Installation of any coating without an anti-skid is at your own risk. Generally speaking, the more coats applied the slicker the surface. Clear and color coats require anti-skid.

Coverage

Don’t you hate it when you buy a can of paint and it says it will cover 1,000 Sq. Ft. and half that later you are on your way back to the store? Coverage on any product will vary and you should account for this when placing your order.

On an average to smooth garage floor you will get coverage up to 400 Sq. Ft. per gallon per coat. On a porous floor that coverage could be reduced to 300 Sq. Ft. and in extreme cases it could be even less. The good news is the coverage on the second and third coats gets progressively better.

IMPORTANT: 400 Sq. Ft. per gallon per coat is the maximum, but typical coverage for gray, clear and colors. DO NOT try and stretch the product further or it will fail immediately on cure. DO NOT apply the product any thicker than what is described or you will get solvent bubbles.

Surface Preparation

Important Update Your concrete should abosorb 1/4 cup of water within 30 seconds or it will need to be sanded prior to application.

For the most part, the surface preparation here is like painting or coating any other surface. You want a surface that is clean and dry. It needs to be free from other sealers and coatings and it needs to be free of oil, grease, etc.

If your floor is already clean, sweep it out and get it dust free. A compressor hose works very well. Again make sure it is completely dry.

If your floor is dirty, power wash it or rinse it off to get it reasonably clean. Then let it dry. It can’t be damp at all. Completely, 100% dry.

If your floor has oil stains in it, use Metal Blast. Let it sit as recommended, scrub the spot with a cleaning brush and then rinse it off. Test the area with a small amount of water. If it beads up, repeat. If it does not bead up, you are good to go.

A little common sense: The coating needs to be able to penetrate and it is only as strong as what it is applied over. If you have a floor that has been sealed or coated in the past, or if you have a floor that is completely covered in oil and grease stains, you are going to have to be more vigilant. You may need to grind the floor. For smooth concrete or concrete that may have been sealed, we recommend doing a small adhesion test patch prior to application.

Generally speaking, crack and chip repair material is cheaper than our product. It is advisable to repair any concrete damage ahead of time as it will save you money and make the job go easier.

Did we mention the floor needs to be completely dry?

Mixing

This is really easy but it’s really important. Open the can. Take a paint stick and stir it for three minutes. Not 2.5 minutes and not 5 minutes. Mix it for three minutes until the coating is completely homogenous, pour an amount that you can work with into a paint tray and then tap the lid back on.

Application

DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. If you are using Rust Bullet Standard that is not marked as being for concrete, then you should thin the Rust Bullet Standard with the Rust Bullet Solvent, 6oz per gallon.

STOP: Read this paragraph twice. You apply Rust Bullet like you apply paint. Using short ‘W’ strokes and then lightly back-rolling. If you roll on long strokes you will have roller marks. You might not see them during the install, but you will later. Watch the video and use the strokes indicated and marked ‘Perfect Rolling’ or you will have roller marks.

Two to three coats of Rust Bullet is usually sufficient for most concrete applications depending on the concrete’s condition and existing damage. It may be applied by brush, roller (3/8 inch nap) or commercial spray equipment. With concrete applications, roller seems to be the preferred method of application amongst our customers. Porous concrete and heavy traffic areas may require additional coats. Rust Bullet is self-leveling and can fill in cracks, gaps and chips up to 1/8 inch.

If a slip resistant surface is desired, sprinkle silica or similar fine sand over a tacky coat of Rust Bullet, allow just enough time for the sand to adhere and then apply the final coat of Rust Bullet. Re-coat time is between 2-6 hours but never more than 12 hours. For color and clear coats we generally suggest working as close to the 6 hour time frame (over the prior coat) as possible and do not recommend exceeding 10 hours. For best results, recoat as soon as you can touch the previously coated section, with a gloved hand, and it is tack free with no transfer. This window can be expanded if the humidity is below 50% and shortened considerably if the humidity is above 70%. Make sure floor is no longer tacky before walking on it. If your foot sticks it will ruin your floor. Alternatively use spiked shoes. Again, the 12 hours may be decreased if in a high humidity area. If the humidity exceeds 90% it is important to speak with one of our staff members before proceeding. If 12 hours has lapsed the surface needs to be lightly scuffed with 150 grit sandpaper or similar. Just enough to break the glaze. Full cure time is 72 hours.

We have an additive available if you need to complete your floor quickly. If you need a Rapid Dry formulation, please let us know.

For residential applications, a minimum 6 mil DFT is required for the warranty to be applicable. This can usually be achieved with 2 coats of the Rust Bullet Standard. Any areas that have high traffic may need additional coats.

For Commercial/Industrial Applications, a minimum 12 mil DFT of the Rust Bullet Standard must be applied for the warranty to be applicable. To be clear, the minimum DFT is the Standard Product only (or base coat), and does not include the Rust Bullet Top Coat or any other type of coatings.

Refinishing or touch ups are also similar, remove loose or flaky paint (if any) dirt, debris, dust, grease, oils etc., scuff the surface with 150 grit or with Rust Bullet Metal Blast, let dry and apply more Rust Bullet.

Our color coat may be applied if desired. Typically one coat is sufficient. Our color coat is high gloss and serious injury will occur if you do not take precautions because it is very slick. We recommend a generous portion of silica sand or included anti-skid. Our color coat is intended to be installed over the base coat if a different color is desired and is not a substitution for any of the previously mentioned coats. We include an aluminum oxide anti-skid which should be mixed into the final top coat.

Important Notes:

  • Do not apply in direct sunlight.
  • Do not apply if raining or if rain is expected.
  • High humidity drastically reduces recoat time.
  • Grinding will result in more material being absorbed and additional coats may be needed.
  • AT 70% plus humidity recoat window becomes 4-6 hours. Recoat as soon as you can safely walk on the floor. Touching floor with gloved hand is a good indication of readiness. If no paint transfer occurs, material is ready to be coated.
  • Be especially careful with clear and white as any uncured gray may leave coating blemishes. Clear and white may require multiple coats. While you want to recoat ASAP the gray cannot be wet at all.
  • Two coats of clear is always recommended for full broadcast applications.
  • DO NOT THIN any product that has been formulated for concrete or any of the top coats.
  • For random broadcast flake, full broadcast flake and antiskid please see product specific pages on the website.

WAREHOUSE FLOORS

Warehouse floors have typically been ridiculously expensive and time consuming to coat. Rust Bullet easily coated this floor and it stands up to millions of dollars of product being moved in and out on fork lifts and pallet jacks.

WETALLA SEWERAGE TREATMENT PLANT CLARIFIER

McBerns was commissioned to refurbish a Sewerage Treatment Clarifier Launder, in Toowoomba S.E..Queensland. It was constructed and commissioned in 2006. The coating covering the concrete launder surface had deteriorated and was in serious need of repair. We introduced Rust Bullet to the Water Authority who were keen to put it to the test. Re-surfacing with Rust Bullet took place in May 2012.

FLEXIFLO HOSE FACTORY

FlexiFlo Hose Factory is located in the Jubail Industrial City was constructed in the year 1998. It was acquired to set up a new manufacturing location. The floor had undergone several different uses and has been abused over the years. The concrete floor had also undergone lot of wear and tear damages all over the surface. The concrete was not in good condition to install the machinery, and for technicians to perform their work. The conventional option was to re-do the whole concrete, which was time consuming and very expensive . Rust Bullet for Concrete offered a new effective solution.
